Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii)
Japanese barberry is a thorny shrub ideal for barrier plantings, tolerating various light exposures and soils. While purple-leaved cultivars turn green in shade, the plant grows slowly yet transplants effortlessly. Typically reaching three to six feet in height and spreading four to seven feet, it can be sheared into a hedge. Notable for its persistent red fruits and vibrant fall foliage ranging from red to orange and yellow, some strains bear fruit more abundantly than others. Though it produces yellow flowers, they are not particularly ornamental.
